How to Maintain and Resurface Gym Floors

July 17, 2025

Gym Floor Maintenance and Longevity

Daily and monthly maintenance routines are essential for preserving hardwood gym floors and extending their lifespan. With proper care, annual recoating can significantly delay the need for full sanding and refinishing, often by 5 to 10 years.

Daily Cleaning:

  • Use a dust mop with a light spray of Squeaky Cleaner to remove dust, dirt, and other debris.
  • Launder gym mops frequently to avoid spreading contaminants.

Monthly Cleaning:

  • Deep clean the floor using an automatic floor scrubber and Squeaky Cleaner.
  • This helps remove built-up grease, oil, tar, and other residues that daily cleaning may miss.

Preventing Damage:

  • Place mats or rugs at gym entrances to trap dirt from shoes.
  • Prohibit cleats, high heels, and other items with high PSI from contacting the floor.
  • Avoid dragging mats or heavy objects across the surface.
  • Always ensure the floor is clean before applying any protective coverings.

Recoating and Resurfacing:

  • Annual Recoating: Adds a protective top layer that maintains floor integrity and delays major restoration by protecting the wood from scratches, scuffs, and other damage caused by foot traffic, sports equipment, and moisture.
  • Resurfacing: Typically required every 10–15 years, this process involves sanding the floor, repairing or replacing damaged boards, and reapplying stain, paint, and finish. It helps level the surface and remove deep scratches or dents.

Proper daily, monthly, and annual care will keep gym floors safe, functional, and visually appealing for years to come.
